With “Actionbound – Sustainability Goals in my City, we are committed to a sustainable future! In this interactive educational project, young people and adults in various cities form small teams learn to explore traces of sustainability together. The project is intergenerational, bringing students and adults together to collaborate and learn from each other. The participating students come from Ulm, Odesa, and Sofia.
Democracy is a concept we are pretty much all familiar with, however, defining its practical implementation can sometimes turn out to be a challenging task. It is not just about values in theory—it is about putting those vary values into action. That’s why we have come up with this project aiming at combining democratic principles with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
We see democracy and sustainable development as mutually reinforcing: democratic systems can thus become the point of departure to promote transparency, equality, and participation, all essential for achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In return, the SDGs—through goals such as quality education, reduced inequalities, or climate action—can strengthen democratic structures.
These examples highlight the deep connection between democracy and sustainable development—and underscore the vital role that civil society organizations play in achieving these goals. By hosting workshops and debates, we aim to connect global ambitions with local realities, tackling questions like: How can top-down UN goals be adapted to grassroots needs?
Our initiative, “Actionbound – Sustainability Goals in My City,” starts from the local level, using digital tools to inspire democratic engagement and sustainable thinking—right where people live and act.
Civil society organizations are important partners today in the implementation of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As stated in the action framework of the corresponding Education 2030 Agenda (Education 2030 Framework for Action):
“Civil society organizations play a crucial role. They must be involved and engaged at all stages, from planning to monitoring and evaluation, with their participation being institutionalized and guaranteed.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations are a global plan to promote peace, prosperity, and environmental protection. They were adopted in 2015 by all UN member states as part of the 2030 Agenda and are set to be achieved by 2030.
The SDGs cover various areas, including poverty eradication, education, gender equality, clean water, climate action, and sustainable cities. Each goal is designed to address social, economic, and environmental challenges collectively, ensuring a sustainable future for all people and the planet.
